Principal Security Consultant

Job Description

As a Principal Security Consultant, you will draw up, and take end responsibility for, the architectural designs during presales requests or after an audit of the customer’s current network. As part of your job, you will have direct customer contact to explain the proposed architecture or to assist customers with their security challenges.  Further, you will be the technical project leader for integration and implementation of complex security projects in existing and new Customer security environments.

You will use your expert view and knowledge on security to constantly optimize the Customer’s environment and provide input for the security product portfolio and the internal processes.

The Principal Security Consultant will be able to perform multiple roles:


  • Delivery

Provide the lead in the delivery of large and/or complex projects acting as a security service design authority and security consultant’s team lead, ensuring that provided solutions remain in scope of the project and are aligned to agreed business requirements, appropriate delivery methodologies are followed and that effective governance (eg. Meeting minutes, pm tasks & deliverables) is applied.

Delivery of smaller stand-alone / complex projects as required.

Provide support and guidance in the area of responsibility as product lead to consultants working on other PS projects.

Provide peer reviews of High Level Design, Low Level Design and other project documentation as required.

Work with internal and external stake holders to understand business requirements and prepare appropriate technical solution designs at both high and low levels.


  • Practice development / Product Lead

Take the technical lead and make a significant contribution to the on-going development of PS security services (technology aka DDOS, IPv6, endpoint & product families) to ensure that they reflect current industry best practice and trends and remain aligned to customer requirements and expectations.

Present (and regularly update training sessions of) new developed PS solutions to the key groups within the company (AMs, presales, customer board, …).

Act as a mentor/de-facto expert in a certain technology to less experienced members of the PS team.

Act as an advocate of the PS team within the wider company.



  • Pre-sales

Work directly with the sales teams to refine end-customer business requirements and design security services solutions.

Take the leading role in the definition, scope, approach, planning and estimating of PS security services.

Attend customer (Board) meetings where applicable.

Lead in the preparation of technical RFP responses and SOWs for complex PS security services.

Support and actively participate in the business development of the practice by identifying additional business opportunities within the current customer base.

Provide high level and informed business consulting with a particular emphasis on demonstrating the value and role of security services in typical businesses.

Manage pre-sales activities in a timely and efficient manner following the agreed business practices using the applicable tools.

Maintain day to day records of project work to allow accurate billing and reporting of consultancy time. (delivery !)

Maintain effective network of business contacts within the company and their partner community.

Maintain and grow their own knowledge to ensure this maintains fully relevant to the security services practice and its clients.

Provide staff management / coaching to a team of 2-5 consultants where assigned.

Support the manager in specific management activities.

Have good/excellent-strong presentation and written/verbal communications skills at multiple levels of an organization.

Result driven attitude (can do, drive to obtain a result whatever the problems encountered along the path)

Have a Bachelor's Degree or higher

Have a minimum of 8 years of security consulting experience in a wider network security area including at least 1 year of managing multiple consultants or complex customer projects simultaneously


Required experience

Experience with building, maintaining, reviewing all configurations/settings/policies on chosen technologies

Experience of multi-vendor, managed outsourcing environments.

Experience working with operational environments following ITIL frameworks (ITIL v3 basic certification)

Good general knowledge and expertise of networking (TCP/IP, IPv6, (dynamic) routing, switching, WAN, LAN, …)  -> back up by relevant certification & training

Excellent documentation skills

Excellent presentation skills

Excellent troubleshooting skills (technical and non-technical)

Ability to review processes and procedures – and improve them

Migration of complex legacy infrastructures to new (managed security) services platforms


Experience participating in network & system security projects to provide:

Business requirements analysis and support for Solutions Architects (Business Development, Product Manager, (pre-)sales)

Production of detailed infrastructure high level & low level designs including physical and virtual aspects of security components


Technical expertise in at least three of these ‘major’ network security area’s:

Network level & NextGen FWs: Palo Alto, Check Point, Cisco

Application level FWs: BlueCoat, F5 ASM+APM, Zscaler, Cisco IronPort Web

Mail Security: Cisco IronPort Mail, Barracuda,

Remote Access (IPSEC, SSL): PulseSecure, F5 APM

Load Balancing: F5 LTM + GTM

Technology Security: IPv6, DDOS, Datacenter FWs,

IDP/IPS: Sourcefire, McAfee, Check Point, Palo Alto

SIEM & Log Collection: HP ArcSight, Splunk, GrayLog, Exabeam,  …

End Point Security: SentinelOne, Check Point, Palo Alto, TrendMicro, …

APT: Palo Alto WildFire & Traps, Check Point SandBlast, FireEye, …

Identity & Access Management: Cisco ISE, Pulse PolicySecure …

ITIL v3 fundamentals certification

Project Management fundamentals certification

CISSP or equivalent.
