Job description: Biotechnicians at Janssen support scientists in Research & Development to discover new pharmaceuticals and medical treatments, increase vivarium processes, develop innovative technologies and improve animal welfare. Biotechnicians support and conduct studies in various animal species under the supervision of a biological researcher or scientist. They need to be familiar with animal husbandry and welfare policies, experimental protocols/procedures, laboratory equipment and they need to provide thorough and meticulous work. Experience in a broad range of animal handling techniques, good computer skills for recording and attention to detail are valuable qualities. The job requires significant documentation and reporting on animal welfare and experimental findings.
Responsibilities and duties (part 1/2) Experiments in animals are executed conform internal and external guidelines, compliance with guidelines on health & safety, animal ethics, laboratory animal legislation, quality, data integrity, training plans, time registration, standard operating procedures and work instructions is essential.
Be a role model in the daily care (welfare, health, hygiene) of rodents and non-rodents: - daily monitoring of the health of the animal - know and apply the correct housing (cage size, cage enrichment) conditions - daily control of environmental parameters (temperature, relative humidity, light, sound) - socialization programs for animals - assess and register pain levels (P-level) - report and register non-conformities/observations/injured/sick animals to the PI and veterinarian - provide care and/or mediation as prescribed by the treating veterinarian
Optional contribution in the in-life phase of studies in rodents and/or non-rodents: - assist in the creation of scientific experiments and development of methodologies - perform the assigned experiments according protocol - identification of animals (microchip, tattoo, ear or tail biopsy) - dosing test substances (subcutaneous, intramuscular, oral, intravenous, intraperitoneal) - application of anesthesia and euthanasia of animals - collection of urine and blood samples (orbital, sublingual, tail or other veins, heart puncture) - assist in diagnostic autopsy, dissection, surgery and/or special care procedures - use and maintenance of IVC (individually ventilated cages) cages - pre- and postoperative care and knowledge of aseptic work instructions
Responsibilities and duties (part 2/2) Record and report: - record all information obtained in the experiments according to existing practices/forms - ensure that documents and data are well preserved - summarize data and gives advice in decision making - prepare technical reports - write methodologies for internal and/or external use - use scientific literature in function of own experiments
Contribute to efficient vivarium operations: - correct use and maintenance of the laboratory equipment and computerized systems - perform calibrations and quality checks - suggest and introduce innovations in the daily processes
Qualifications: - At least a bachelor¿s degree in animal or biomedical sciences - A FELASA B certificate is required - Experience with Microsoft Office applications (Outlook, Word, Excel, PowerPoint) - Reading, speaking and writing skills in Dutch and English
