an assessment
More and more companies are asking for an assessment during an application procedure. That might sound exciting or complicated, but it is mainly about opportunities.
At an assessment center or ‘assessment’, we look beyond your CV. We want to get to know you better as a person: how you think, work, and collaborate with others. This gives us a clear and realistic picture of your unique talents and helps us identify how they can best be applied in your future job. That way we can assess whether a role truly fits you — and whether you fit the organization.
What exactly does an assessment involve, how does it work, and how do you prepare optimally?
what is an assessment center?
An assessment center is not a test you have to pass, but an opportunity to show who you are. At Randstad, we use this method to identify your talents, skills, and potential in an objective and professional way. It helps us look beyond your CV and interview. We want to understand how you think, act, and collaborate in situations that resemble the reality of the job. That way we can assess whether a role truly fits you — and whether you fit the organization.
how does such an assessment work?
An assessment is a structured day on which you carry out various assignments, individually or in a group. You will receive a clear schedule and practical info in advance. The assessment takes place in one of our offices or online, depending on the assignment.
what components does an assessment consist of?
Depending on the assignment and profile, an assessment center consists of various components. For this, we use scientifically backed methods and tests. Such as:
- simulations and role plays
- case assignments
- presentations
- psychometric tests
- personality questionnaires
- interviews with a consultant
Everything is aimed at identifying your strengths and growth potential. Everything happens in a professional and respectful environment, with attention to your unique profile.
what is evaluated?
During an assessment center at Randstad, we look at a broad spectrum of competencies — always tailored to the role and organization for which you are applying. Those competencies are grouped into five domains:
1. managing information
how do you process data, ideas, and insights to reach clear conclusions or solutions?
2. managing tasks
how do you plan and organize your work to achieve results efficiently and purposefully?
3. managing people
how do you direct others in a leadership context, and how do you take on responsibility?
4. managing interpersonal relationships
how do you build and maintain professional relationships, for example with colleagues, clients, or partners?
5. managing yourself
how do you handle your own performance, development, and resilience?
These competencies form the basis of the assessment program that we assemble on a tailor-made basis in consultation with the client. That way we can assess in an objective manner your strengths and identify opportunities for growth.
the assessment tests
You will complete a series of tests during an assessment center. No worries: it is not an exam, but tools to better understand your talents and thinking style, and to get an objective and nuanced picture of who you are and how you function in a professional context.
why do we use tests?

how do you prepare for an assessment?
You don't need to study anything. The tests are designed to identify your natural strengths.
We mainly want to see how you react spontaneously and apply your qualities. So, you don't need to study subject knowledge.
- It helps to start the tests well-rested and focused.
- Ensure a quiet environment and read the instructions carefully.
- Take the time to answer each question attentively.
- When in doubt: remain yourself.
what happens after the assessment?
Whether you had an interview, went through an assessment, or both: we gather different types of information to form a clear and nuanced picture of you. Your results are always carefully interpreted by experienced consultants, in conjunction with your behavior, answers, and test performance.
what do we use the results for?
The insights from your interview and/or assessment are used to:
-
determine whether you match a specific role or organization (in selection procedures),
-
identify your strengths and development points (in development centers),
-
provide objective input for career decisions, coaching, or training tracks.
We do not look at isolated scores or snapshots, but at the whole picture. This way you receive a fair and relevant evaluation.
how do you receive feedback?
You will always receive personal feedback, tailored to the procedure you were in. This takes place verbally during a phone or face-to-face conversation. You can count on:
- a clear explanation of your results and what they mean,
- concrete examples from your interview or assessment,
- targeted tips for your further development.
We want you to be able to work with your feedback — whether to get to know yourself better, guide your career, or prepare for a next step. However, the report itself can only be requested from the client, i.e., the employer.
