Alstom has been part of the Belgian railway history for about 130 years. Today, from Charleroi (BE), the company is active through two centers of excellence: - Signalling Systems – Center of excellence ERTMS (European standard development and implementation) - Power Electronics – Center of excellence Traction Systems (Traction solutions / auxiliary converters / low voltage cabinets) Important efforts in R&D support the development of these activities contributing actively to promoting a safe and performant railway network as well as sustainable mobility solutions worldwide. The Alstom Belgium teams have an excellent knowledge and reputation in the global project management and every day from Charleroi, about 1050 employees, among which 500 engineers, are working on more than 100 projects all over the world. The Power Design Engineer defines the power schemes and designs electrical components for traction drives or auxiliary converter systems.
Position in the organization:
The Software Design Engineer reports hierarchically to the Power Domain Leader or Traction System Manager, and functionally to the Traction or Auxiliary PrEM. He is strongly linked to others Power Design Engineers. In order to use and deploy the same development methods and ensure synergies, coordination and maximum carry-over between traction drives or auxiliary converter systems, the Power Design Engineer shall follow instructions given by the Power Skill Leader. Under supervision of the PrEM, the Power Design Engineer shall carry out his mission in a tender, project, product or R&D team. He/She is in contact with other technical domains (mechanical design, control-command, validation, RAMS), and with Sourcing and Quality departments.
o No change requests due to design issues in power field o Work-packages achieved according to budget and planning.
Specific responsibilities of the role:
Methodology o Uses the design rules for Power o Uses standard design deliverables for Power o Uses the standards tools in line with Alstom expectations and rules o Contributes to define rules and standard design deliverables o Contributes to write knowledge guidelines o Contributes to Return of Experience on power schemes and Electrical components
Tender, product, project or R&D development o Calculates electrical or thermal constraints related to all components of the power scheme (use MATLAB, SABER, MATHCAD or CITHEL tools) to fulfil all customer and normative requirements. Write corresponding design reports o Define the interfaces of electrical components with mechanical department o Specifies the electrical components of the traction drives or auxiliary converters o Power electronic components (IGBT, diodes, …) o Switchgear o Traction motors o Passive components (inductors, transformers, capacitors, resistors, busbars, …) o Interface components with control electronics (sensors, gate drives, relays, …) o Participates in design review with suppliers o Participates in the business award and components qualification o Specifies the power requirements to be exported to the control/command engineer (flux law, torque law, PWM strategy, protection thresholds, …) o Participates in the definition of validation tests of the power scheme with the validation engineer o Participates in investigation tests o Contributes to the problem solving o Prepares the power design reviews in accordance with DFQ system o Participates in technical core team meetings
Educational requirement: Master degree in electrical engineering
Language skills: Fluency in written and spoken French. Able to communicate in English.
Behavioural competencies: Autonomy, analytical mind, team spirit, good communication skills, time management skill; sense of priorities; hands-on approach, ability to take part in a project.
