More than half the people who know DEME would like to work there. That means that the dredging company has won the Randstad Award for the most attractive employer for the second time.

17th Randstad Employer Brand Research: never have the differences been so small

From December to the end of January, HR service provider Randstad and market research consultancy TNS surveyed 11,000 students, employees and job-seekers about the attractiveness of the major Belgian employers. Dredging company DEM emerged as the winner for the second time. The company previously won the award in 2012.

Jan Denys, Labour Market Expert at Randstad, analyses the track record of the winner of the 17th Randstad Award. 'In 2010, 2011 and 2013, DEME's visibility was too limited for a place in the national ranking, although it was always in top position among Dutch-speaking respondents.'

The Belgian dredging company received an attractiveness score of 51.3% this year. So the dredging company's employer brand is doing very well. That is no coincidence, says CEO Alain Bernard.

“We work strategically on our employer brand, including by holding networking events and presentations in higher-education colleges and universities.”

pharmaceuticals close behind

Remarkably, never in the history of Randstad Employer Brand Research have so many Belgian companies featured at the top of the rankings. And never before has the difference in score between first and fifth place been so narrow.

“Strictly speaking, Pairi Daiza (50.8%), Janssen Pharmaceutica (50.3%), GlaxoSmithKline (50%) and Studio 100 (49.2%) could also have won the award”, says Jan Denys.

Colruyt deserves special mention. The supermarket chain doubled its attractiveness between 2005 and 2017, from 21 to 43%.

The most attractive sector this year, although by the narrowest of margins, remains the pharmaceuticals sector at 42.6%. At 42.1%, media jumps ahead of aeronautics, last year's number two. IT & consultancy and electronics complete the top five. Notable climbers are the energy (+3.9%) and HR sectors (+3.3%).
