Yes, that is possible. Normally it is not possible to terminate an employment contract for a specific period prematurely, except during the trial period. However, an exception is made for student jobs. However, in doing so, both you and your employer must take into consideration a number of rules.

The trial period for student jobs is a minimum of 7 and a maximum of 14 days. Neither you nor your employer are entitled to terminate the employment contract during the first 7 days. As from the 8th to the 14th day you or your employer may terminate the contract without notice or compensation.

Working as a temping student? Then you will generally receive your contracts for a 1-week period. Then the trial period cannot be 7 days. In the case of temping, the trial period is generally 3 days. During this trial period either party is entitled to cancel the employment contract without notice or compensation.

How do you terminate the contract in that case? During the trial period this can be verbally agreed and no formalities are required.

    • This is 1 calendar day, when you have a contract for a maximum of 1 month.
    • If your employment contract lasts for longer than 1 month, then you must respect a notice period of 3 calendar days.

How must this be done? This must always be done in writing. You can hand your notice letter to your employer and ask for a signature of confirmation. The notice period will then start on the following Monday. You may also do this by sending a recorded letter or even using a bailiff.

Hoe verbreek je dat contract? In de proefperiode kan dat nog mondeling en zijn er geen formaliteiten nodig.

De opzeggingstermijn gaat in beide gevallen in op de maandag die volgt op de opzegging. Je werkgever moet je daarvoor een aangetekende brief sturen of het doen via een gerechtsdeurwaarder.
